An unknown screech in the dark,
Urges to run left unfulfilled,
The setting moon in the distance
Speeds ahead glowing red.
A child looks up,
Requesting shelter.
Her soft voice dripping
with malicious foreboding.
Compliance,
But not into one's own,
Instead into the homestead
Of some old stranger.
A small room
Wallpaper peeling
To reveal rusted bricks.
Alone with the child,
Pale sharp fingers shut the door.
Awkward silence
As hairs stand on end.
Shocked stare frozen face
Eyes following all movements.
Fluid oozing from above
Dripping down on the tenants.
As the door creeks ajar
Wishes for eyes to open
And reveal reality
Go unheard
And the gravity of the situation
Becomes all too clear.
